OBJ.03.BIRADIAL.HORN
What Inspired OBJ.03.BIRADIAL.HORN
The inspiration for the OBJ.03.BIRADIAL.HORN arrived in two distinct waves. The first wave emerged from the growing cultural resurgence of large-format horn speakers, sparked by the influence of Devon Turnbull (OJAS) and amplified by a new global DIY audio community linked through social media and audio meet ups. The reimagining of classic Altec and Western Electric designs set a new sonic signature for listening bars, creative studios, and design-led retail spaces. We felt compelled to contribute our own interpretation, but instead of revisiting American heritage, we looked to British audio history. This led us to the Vitavox Bitone, a design legacy dating back to 1930 and founded by Leonard Young. Vitavox’s century-long dedication to craftsmanship and creating an emotionally resonant sound became our true north. Our research evolved into collecting a genuine archive of Vitavox components, pieces we now treasure in our heritage listening barn in Shropshire. The second wave of inspiration came through collaboration with an architecture practice that challenged us to broaden the OBJ.03’s adaptability. Together, we explored new stand systems, port configurations, and spatial integrations that would allow the speaker to sit confidently in a wide variety of environments, from domestic interiors to public listening spaces.
How We Created OBJ.03.BIRADIAL.HORN
Birch plywood, known for its strength, stability, and acoustic character, became the foundation for the OBJ.03, just as it was for many of the original Vitavox designs. Working with plywood has been central to our practice, and for this project we worked with the thickness of 18mm to improve rigidity and resonance. To modernize the sound and deliver a fuller low-end experience, we introduced additional bass capability, which called for expert input from Audio Engineers at Volt working on vibration management and internal damping by using a hemp mesh. Our collaboration with Volt continued with them playing a crucial role; with custom crossovers and driver technology becoming essential to the system’s clarity and dynamic range. We hold immense respect for Kat and Steve at Volt—their family-run approach to innovation continues to elevate our work. To enhance performance further, we integrated vertical ports beneath the cabinet, allowing the speaker to sit flush against walls without compromising airflow. The horns themselves have been turned from plywood and can be finished in any stain or color, though we also offer hardwood options such as sapele, iroko, oak, or walnut—each introducing its own aesthetic and acoustic richness to the final installation.
Commissioning an OBJ.03.BIRADIAL.HORN
If you're interested in commissioning an OBJ.03.BIRADIAL.HORN, we’ll guide you through every step, providing drawings, measurements, finish options, and component recommendations tailored to your space. As many of the materials we use are reclaimed or limited in availability, each piece exists in very small numbers, with some builds being truly one-of-one. This ensures your OBJ.03 is not just a speaker but a singular object crafted specifically for you.
