OBJ.03.HEX.HORN.SUBWOOFER
What Inspired OBJ.03.HEX.HORN & SUBWOOFER
The OBJ.03.HEX.HORN & SUBWOOFER was born from our desire to add deep, “danceable” lows to the OBJ.03 format, creating a system that could deliver immersive bass while retaining the sculptural presence of the OBJ.03. Inspiration came from a variety of sources: the scooped bass design seen in Carnaval speaker systems and the super-effect low-end found in cinema sound systems. These references informed our approach to porting, cabinet volume, and overall frequency response. To understand the lineage of this design, it is helpful to reference the development of the OBJ.03.BIRADIAL.HORN and the larger OBJ.03.HEX.HORN, as both provided foundational insight into horn geometry, driver integration, and the a story between form and sound.
Creating OBJ.03.HEX.HORN & SUBWOOFER
The cabinet for this subwoofer began its life in a cinema. To elaborate, when we acquired an entire cinema’s worth of speakers from a members club in west London, we discovered two water-damaged TPI subwoofers. We have always admired TPI for their audio heritage and technical expertise, these cabinets became the foundation for our project. The original 4th-order bandpass enclosures had excellent response, but when introducing our low-frequency crossovers, we encountered trapped air and resonance issues. Over the course of weeks of designs, multiple iterations in cabinet design, we experimented with three different iterations - keeping the cabinet volume constant while redesigning porting. The final design features a transitional, scooped port and front loaded speaker, that maximizes airflow and helps with low-frequency output, allowing the subwoofer to deliver controlled, powerful bass with its simple crossover, complementing the OBJ.03 mids. This careful tuning ensures the system maintains clarity in the mids and highs of the OBJ.03 while providing a deep, physical low-end experience.
Commissioning an OBJ.03.HEX.HORN & SUBWOOFER
For commissions, we offer a collaborative process, providing detailed drawings, measurements, and guidance on finishes, driver choices, and placement. Because the design relies on reclaimed and limited-availability components, production is highly restricted, with some units being completely one-of-a-kind. Each OBJ.03.HEX.HORN & SUBWOOFER is therefore a unique object, combining the heritage of cinema sound systems, high-performance engineering, and sculptural craftsmanship into a single, immersive audio installation.
